Gatundu North Sub-County Public Service Officer has said a rescue centre for street children will soon be established in the area.
Speaking to journalists at Kamwangi trading centre in Gatundu North on Tuesday, Nancy Mwangi said the Kiambu County government had set aside Sh21 million for the construction of the rehabilitation centre.
The public service officer also said that the county government had already identified a piece of land in Kamwangi where the centre will be built.
She said construction of the centre is expected to be completed by mid next year.
“The county government has set aside Sh21 million for the construction of a rehabilitation centre here in Gatundu North,” said Mwangi.
Mwangi decried rising number of street children in the area adding that the rehabilitation centre will act as a home for the children.
“The number of street children in Gatundu North has doubled over the years and the county is keen to rehabilitate and also train them,” she said.
The official said that the rising number of street children has posed a threat to security noting that most of them are engaging in unlawful activities.
The officer also said that cases of parents abandoning their children are on the rise in the sub-county.
She advised parents not to abandon their children and instead seek the government's support in raising them.
