Traders and hawkers in Kibera have been urged to use well build stalls in their business operations instead of putting their products on the ground.

A trader at Laini Saba market, Geoffrey Ongori said many traders and hawkers have opted to use the ground to sell their merchandise as opposed to using stalls built by the municipal council.

“It is unhealthy to sell food items just laid on the ground. This may contaminate the food items, thus, infecting consumers with diseases. The market area is not clean to lay food products on the bear ground,’’ he said.

He added that traders and hawkers have decided not to use the built stalls in the market just because the money they are asked to pay is high.

“There are so many stalls in the market but using them has become expensive. I’d rather lay my products on the ground. I pay a daily tax of sh30 and operate the whole day as opposed to renting a stall for sh600,” said Elizabeth Murimi, a hawker.

Danson Mungatana, another hawker said the location of the stalls does not attract customers and that is why he prefers using the ground as his selling ground. He added that the stalls are so hidden that customers cannot even get there.

‘‘Since I started operating in an open place, customers can see me and I have been making big sales in a day. I am enjoying this,” he said.
