Long distance truck drivers have been urged to be careful during this December season and if possible reduce the number of trips they make.

Rift Valley traffic commandant Mary Omari said transit drivers among others, cause accidents due to lack of concentration and being tired after driving for long hours without resting.

Omari, however, said the traffic department has come up with a raft of measures to maintain order and discipline on the Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

“Most of the accidents recorded that involve long distance drivers happen during the night, and if we regulate the number of trips they make, this can definitely be dealt with,” Omari noted.

Speaking in her office on Tuesday during a meeting with matatu owners and their representatives, the officer challenged the drivers to adhere to traffic rules to avoid accidents.

“We are calling on all drivers who use the Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret road; all the way to western Kenya to be wary during this festive season because we do not want to record another grisly accident report at Salgaa or any other place considered as black spot,” she said.
