The Universities and Academic Staff Union has cautioned the national government against interfering with the leadership transition at Kenyatta University.

Uasu leadership indicated that the government should not use incomplete projects at the university to allow certain individuals to continue in those capacities.

The union said it will not sit and watch as transition in some universities is unconstitutionally abused by the powers that be.

The union chairman Sammy Kubasu and secretary general Muga Kolale said the transition at KU should be transparent and that the rule of law be followed to the letter.

“We are happy with how transition has been done at the Egerton, University of Nairobi, Maseno and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology universities, hence KU should not be exceptional,” Kubasu said in Nakuru on Wednesday.

He pointed out that as institutions of higher learning, they should pave way for others to emulate and suggested that Kenyatta University puts in place a mechanism for smooth transition.

“We expect the same at Kenyatta University where the Vice Chancellor Olive Mugenda is due to complete her term by March next year,” he added.

On his part, Kolale welcomed the appointment of Rose Mwonya as the new Egerton University VC and expressed hope that she has the wherewithal to mitigate the shortcomings that had characterised the governance and management of the institution.

“We appeal to all staff both academic and administration to support her for the smooth running of the university,” he said.

He also hailed the University Council for its adherence to the rule of law which ensured that the recruitment process was above board.

Meanwhile, members of the school management boards should pass the integrity test to qualify to be appointed to the positions, an education official in Njoro, has said.

Nancy Muviru said like other leadership positions, it was paramount that the members have credible characters with unblemished background.

She spoke on Wednesday in her office following the recent appointment of the members of the school board in Njoro sub-county.
