Many road users spent most of their time on Sunday evening at Yaya - Laini Saba road following heavy traffic that had built up on the road due to Valentine Day celebrations.
The matatu operators had to drive long hours to reach their destinations. The carts were also stuck in the jam that spread from Yaya to Kenyatta market to Laini Saba area in Kibera, a distance of more than 5 km.
Nairobi deputy police commander, Moses Ombati, said that the police lack cranes to deal with heavy commercial vehicles.
“We rely on the use of matatus for transportation but it took us a while to reach our premises due to the heavy traffic jam on the road because many people were out with their loved ones celebrating Valentines Day,” said Priscah Ombati, a Kibera.
According to Michael Otengo, a Nissan matatu driver, the traffic worsened after moving carts were also using the same road with matatus. He added that some Psv vehicles, trucks, personal cars and carts got stuck while overlapping hence blocking the road.
“We managed to clear the road at 9:00pm from 6:30pm,’’ said Otengo.
