Nakuru has been known to be one of the counties that has produced famous artistes in the recent past.
However, the problem is that a majority of them are 'poached' by Nairobi or is it the artistes migrating to the green city in the sun?
Many artistes start their projects in Nakuru but within a short time, they shift their bases to Nairobi.
The Nakuru Player’s Theater is known to be a center where some of the famous Kenyan artistes were nurtured before they migrated to the capital city.
Samson Githina, an events manager and a music producer in Nakuru town says most artistes opt to migrate to Nairobi in search of greener pastures, a factor that lacks in Nakuru.
He gave three reasons as to why Nakuru artistes choose to migrate and work from Nairobi.
1. Greener pastures
Githina says Nakuru’s grass is too dry for the artistes and that is why most of them get lured into the capital city where he says the grass is greener. “Nakuru is dry in terms of good things for the artistes and that is why most of them choose to move to Nairobi after being noticed,” he said.
2. Poaching
According to Githina, when a promising artiste gets noticed in Nakuru, he/she gets poached by Nairobi producers or music managers who he accused of preying on Nakuru talent instead of nurturing their own.
3. Ego
Githina adds that most singers from Nakuru get carried away by the ego of wanting to be more famous and make more money and that makes them shift base to Nairobi. “Many after realising one song they now want the nation to known them and they feel that the only place they can get noticed is Nairobi,” he says.
