Kimani Wa Kimani, the Nakuru Youth Advisor to Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, now wants those perpetuating female genital mutilation hanged.

Kimani said the punishment being meted out on the perpetrators was too lenient, hence the reason why they still practice it.

“They do not fear as they will only get a jail term of about 15 years. If they were threatened with death, the activities will stop,” said Kimani.

He was speaking on Thursday at a Nakuru hotel during an anti-FGM meeting where he challenged the courts to come up serious measures to curb the vice.

He lamented that the practice was still taking place in the guise of religion.

“Many still think that the girls will not get husbands in case they are not circumcised. It’s important for this vice to be shunned and for parents who are encouraging the practice to be stopped immediately,” he added.

Kimani pointed out Molo, Njoro, Bahati and Naivasha as areas where the vice is rampant.

“We have received reports that the practice is still rife there. We are appealing to teachers to be extra careful especially once children are home from the long holidays as parents often took advantage of that to have them circumcised,” he added.
