A youth group has intensified has began an anti-jigger campaign and aims at reaching all the 20 wards according to its Chairperson, Peter Keynan.

Speaking on Wednesday at Nyaronge Primary School where over 50 people affected by jiggers were treated, Mr Keynan of Kilima Healthcare Group said the initiative, started over a year ago was keen to help victims most of whom were school children.

According to Keynan, at least 30 severely affected victims were treated in 2015 and were taken back to their schools to resume studies.

“We have been doing the job for slightly over a year and we are targeting all the 20 wards in Nyamira," he said.

"Most of these victims are school going children and I am happy that this year alone we solved 30 severe cases and helped them rejoin school for their studies."

Keynan urged area residents to observe hygiene to minimise such cases.

“Cleanliness is the primary remedy towards combating the jigger menace. Let us all ensure we clean our environment to minimise these menace. Further, we are lately dealing with cases of elderly people being caught up because of the untidiness in their living rooms. Please it is upon us to help wipe the menace out without giving it a room to go extreme,” he said.
