Insecurity incidents in Nyansiongo Township, Borabu Constituency has led to protests directed towards government by area residents.
On Wednesday, a number of residents took to streets demanding that the government deploys security personnel to man the township at night following robbery incidents that have seen several people lose property.
They blamed the Nyamira County Government for failing to extend street lights to interior parts of the township making residents fall victims to the robbers who are reported to have attacked more than ten households in a span of two weeks.
“The government has failed to secure us yet we contribute by paying taxes. We have been robbed and the attacks are coordinated with no response at all from the police. The town is poorly lit and this makes a greater population vulnerable. We urgently need a solution to the menace,” said Peter Mokami on behalf of the residents.
They called for a crackdown on illegal weapons in the regions alleging that most of the robbery incidents were armed making.
"These people are heavily armed. You cannot fight them if they attack you. The government should also consider carrying out a disarmament exercise and if possible bring to justice the culprits,” Mokami added.
They also reiterated their readiness to provide information with authorities to expedite the process of restoring order in the agricultural town situated in the former settlement schemes.
