At least six houses were gutted down by a fire on Monday night at Ayany area in Kibera leading to loss of property whose value is yet to be determined.
Though the cause of the fire could not be immediately established residents claim that it was started after a charcoal burner that was light by one of the residents who is said to have locked it in the house and left for a drinking spree.
"It was at midnight when I was awoken by noise from my neighbours only to realise that the fire had spread to my house. I had no option but to help my family out immediately for safety," said Kevin Abwora.
Also affected by the fire is Joseph Otieno, a businessman who lost a shoe retail shop.
"I was rung at around midnight that my shop had caught fire, efforts to rescue my property did not bear fruits since the fire had spread widely."
According to the residents who responded swiftly to help fight the fire, the brigade team arrived 45 minutes later with the guidance of police officers on patrol to put out the fire.
"We tried our best before the arrival of the fire brigade at least to stop the fire from spreading further. Their arrival was however of great importance because they helped us put out the fire completely although we could not manage to save property," said Kennedy Oboto, a resident who responded to alarm raised by the victims.
