Retired teachers from Nakuru County have appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene to have their Sh42.3 billion salaries and pension arrears paid.

Joseph Mwenja who is the spokesperson of the more than 52, 000 former teachers has expressed confidence that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) would release the money if President Uhuru intervenes.

“We call upon the President to order the Treasury to release money belonging to former teachers as soon as possible," said Mwenja on Monday in Nakuru.

Their call comes a week after High Court Judge Janet Mulwa directed the TSC to immediately clear the debt belonging to the former teachers. She also warned the commission's boss Nancy Macharia that she risked facing legal action if the money is not paid immediately.

Mwenja also revealed that they have written to the Attorney General Githu Muigai in a bid to ensure that they receive their dues which they have been waiting for for a long time.

“It is so unfortunate that some of the retired teachers will however not enjoy these benefits since majority have already passed on,” he said.

The retired teachers sued the teachers' commission in 2006 as a result of unpaid salaries and pension arrears, a battle which has been in the courts until the ruling was issued last week.
