Shortage of lecture halls in Kisii University, Kisii county, has reportedly led to the conversion of new students hostels into lecture halls.
This has been attributed to the increasing number of students who are admitted in the school per session.
Several lectures are reported to be held in these unfinished blocks in the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year that began in September.
Students carry chairs from the other rooms to the unfinished buildings.
Kitchenettes with sinks and counters are also used as lecture rooms where lecturers use these tiled counters as their study tables to place their laptop and projectors.
According to the university's chief hall manager, Mr Douglas Mungare, this is not a permanent solution saying measures would be put in place to ensure normalcy resumes.
"We have to construct new hostels for the students who would wish to reside within the university," he said.
A section of students has raised fears that the institution might permanently convert these hostels into lecture rooms further prolonging their wait for accommodation.
"This is very unfair because we now have to reside in private hostels yet we they are converting halls into classes," Matheka Ndambuki, a third year student said.
