The Athi River Sub-County Adult Education Officer, Simon Masila, has urged Machakos County government to support the establishment of resource centres in the region.
Speaking during the International Literacy Day celebrations at Mavoko Stadium on Tuesday, Masila said the centres will promote adult education in the sub-county.
"There is a need for the establishment of resource centres in Mavoko to encourage and promote adult education among residents of the sub-county," said Masila.
He said there are no public learning resource centres in the region and the few available ones are privately owned.
According to Masila, the centres would also help realise the objectives of adult education since there was a shortage of teachers in the region.
"There is scarcity of adult education teachers in Mavoko Sub-County because the government stopped hiring teachers for the programme many years ago," said Masila.
He disclosed that there were only 17 adult education teachers in the entire sub-county, all of who serve as volunteers with no much rewards to boost their morale as a way of motivation.
"I equally call on the education stakeholders from this region to fight hard so as the department to be established for resource centres across the sub county by the county government given that it is apparently a devolved function," said Masila.
Masila said though working as adult educators was difficult, non formal education is the back borne of education in Mavoko Sub County.
