The 130 inmates and 10 children aged below five years were targeted to receive the free medical treatment, according to Aga Khan Hospital Kisii official Happiness Onditi.

Onditi said the prisoners were getting general health checkups and treatment of minor illnesses, malaria, wounds and immunization for children who were accompanying their mothers in prison.

She added that those found with serious conditions will receive follow-up visits and perhaps referred for further treatment in other facilities.

“We would like to see the inmates live a healthy life while in prison and that made us to come ova here for the same,” she said

The inmates, who were serving various sentences, were sensitised on hygiene matters, family planning and the importance of handwashing. Four women were chosen to champion hand washing among their fellow inmates.

They were also exhorted on having a good frame of mind and avoiding stress levels which lowers their immunity, despite being in prison.
