Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Kisumu branch chair Zablon Awange has asked school administrators to refund fees paid by the parents since the government has ordered their closure.
On Friday, the government ordered that students in all schools both private and public go home by Monday save for the candidates expected to sit their exams this year.
Awange said it was unfair for parents to be punished by the government which could have instead ensured that the teachers are paid their dues and the schools run as usual.
While welcoming the move by the Education ministry, Awange indicated that the closure of schools as it, signifies the government’s acceptance that the strike is indeed a reality that is biting them.
He called on the government to postpone both Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations until it honours the 50 to 60 per cent pay increment ordered by the Supreme Court.
"The pressure from all sectors is intense and government must respect court orders or else we shall neither supervise nor mark examinations," said Awange.
