A 37-year-old man was on Monday morning charged before a Kisumu court with assaulting his 20-year-old wife.
Patrick Amutala, a resident of Miwani estate, denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari.
The offence was allegedly committed on September 25.
According to the prosecution, Amutala had sent his wife with Sh200 to buy food worth Sh150 and expected Sh50 as change.
However, the wife Priscah Awino allegedly used the change to settle an earlier debt, something that angered Amutala.
Amutala is said to have attacked her with a cooking stick, accusing her of wasteful spending. The court heard she sustained injuries on her back and was taken to hospital by neighbours.
She later reported the matter at Miwani Police Station leading to the suspect's arrest on Saturday.
Amutala was released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 pending the hearing of the case on the January 14, next year.
The prosecution had earlier opposed the bail application on the grounds that the accused was a still a threat to the complainant.
