A court in Maseno on Friday sentenced a man to 18 years in prison for assault.
While delivering the ruling, Resident Magistrate Philip Oilo said there was sufficient evidence to show that the accused, Rashid Okwena, had the intention of harming the complainant, Caren Akinyi.
According to the prosecution, Okwena assaulted Akinyi on January 14, 2014 following a disagreement over payment.
The court heard that the 26-year-old had helped Akinyi, a resident of Maseno, to weed her farm but failed to honour the payment as agreed.
Akinyi had agreed to pay him Sh150 but instead paid him Sh100.
A confrontation then ensued and Okwena is said to have lost his temper thereby attacking the complainant with blows in which she sustained head injuries.
The accused was later arrested and detained at Maseno Police Station.
In mitigation, Okwena asked the court for forgiveness and blamed the devil for his actions.
"The devil took over when I committed the offence, something I regret up to date," said Okwena.
