A section of parents from Mlolongo Ward within Mavoko Sub-County have urged the government to solve the salary dispute between them and the teachers unions in a bid to end the ongoing strike.
Addressing journalists in Mlolongo Town on Thursday, the parents through their spokesperson, Josephine Anyango, said the strike had caused the parents to incur too many loses.
"Parents from Mlolongo Ward called this meeting to express our feelings on the ongoing teachers strike over their controversial 50-60 per cent pay rise," said Anyango.
The parents claimed it was not easy to monitor their children throughout the extended school holidays arguing that some of them had became unruly.
"Most of our children have become idle and have joined bad company due to the ongoing teachers strike, and parents are unable to control and monitor them," said Ann Kanini, a parent.
Kanini said her teenage female children had the tendency of leaving the house very early in the morning immediately she leaves for work only to return late in the evening.
She said she was worried since she did not know where the girl spend their time adding that the girls were putting their education and life at risk.
Most of the parents said they were not able to know what their children do each day given that they leave their houses early in the morning and return in the evening as they have to fend for their families.
Adhiambo said the government, through the Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Salary and Remuneration Commission should hold constructive talks with the teachers unions' to end the stalemate.
John Mumbi, a parent, said majority of the children from the region especially those living within proximity of Mlolongo Town would have their morals completely corrupted if the teachers strike continues.
Mumbi said schools help control children since they spend the entire day with teachers unlike now that they have nothing to do at home apart from idling.
