Mavoko MP Patrick Makau has called for the resettlement of squatters living in the constituency's Athi River North Location.
Addressing Journalists in Athi River town on Thursday, Makau said the residents need to be resettled by the government to enable them live a normal life like other Kenyans.
"Athi River North location residents have been squatters for so long, it is high time the government resettled them to enable them live reasonable and decent life," said MP Makau.
MP Makau proposed that they should be allocated a piece of land between Mavoko and Kitengela that had previously been used for holding sheep and goats on transit to the livestock market. The land, he argued, belonged to the community.
“This land is lying idle as the squatters languish in poverty due to homelessness,” said Makau.
He lamented that majority of Mavoko residents owned parcels of land but lacked title deeds, a situation he said has hindered them from fully exploiting it.
Makau called on the National Land Commission to intervene with speed to ensure the residents get these important legal documents.
"Mavoko residents have lived for long without getting title deeds, since 1974, it is time they acquired their legal ownership documents,” said Makau.
He said the commission should look into historical land injustices in the region to ensure justice on matters of land ownership are addressed once and for all.
