The Labour ministry in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Kibera community on Wednesday organised a forum to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons.

Happening at the DC Social grounds in Kibera, the 25th anniversary was attended by about 1,000 elderly people from Dandora, Dagoretti and Kibera.

The chief guest, Mary Kimathi from the Labour ministry, congratulated the elderly who attended saying they should know that they are valued and that’s why the government initiated a cash transfer programme for their upkeep.

“Old is gold. I feel good to be talking to you today. I want to tell you that we love you very much and we are working hard to make sure you are settled,” said Kimathi.

She said the government gives out Sh2,000 to the old every month for their upkeep and the government is working on a plan to build them houses.

She urged the elderly who have been registered for the cash programme and have never received their cash due to one reason or another to get it from the Kenya Commercial Bank.
