A fourteen-year-old boy in Lari was today found dead in his bedroom after he hanged himself to death following claims of threats ahead of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education results.
According to a neighbour Grace Wanjohi, the parents of the boy have been threatening to kill him if he scores poorly in the KCPE results expected next week.
She said that for the past two weeks noises of beatings have been heard from their house.
"At times, I had to intervene and stop them from beating the boy. The boy was very quiet and every time he did wrong, the parents threatened to kill him," said Wanjohi.
She revealed that it might have been the reason the boy committed suicide. She also said that the parents tried to escape after realising the incident, but neighbours caught up with them after the police arrived.
Lari OCS Peter Ouko said that this was a very sad incident that was greatly influenced by the parents. He confirmed that the boy was not their biological son, but the two had lived with him since he was 2 years after his parents died.
The OCS warned parents against issuing threats to children ahead of the release of the results to avoid such cases. He said that results are not a reason to instill fear in children and worse causing them to commit suicide.
"I want to warn parents against threatening children concerning their results as they can lead to such crimes. We have arrested the two parents, thanks to residents who ensured they didn't escape," said Ouko.
The body of the 14-year-old was taken to Tigoni Mortuary.
