Nyamira county assembly workers have lauded the ruling by an industrial court sitting in Kisumu that dismissed an application by county assembly leadership to have their salaries reduced by 34 percent of the basic salary.
The workers went to court after the national assembly leadership came up with the measure in a bid to regulate spending within the assembly.
Speaking on Monday to the writer, Mr Jackson Nyakundi who was among the committee members who petitioned the assembly in Kisumu industrial court said the ruling was welcome and said their salaries were within the SRC scale.
“On behalf of the workers from the assembly, I want to laud the industrial court for granting us justice. Our salaries were approved by the SRC and we don’t understand why the assembly’s leadership was of the opinion to cut our dues,” he said.
According to Mr Nyakundi, the workers were ready to tackle any appeal that may be launched by the assembly’s leadership and suggested that the speaker regulates assembly’s committee sitting to regulate spending.
“I don’t think we were the proper targets. We are ready to take them head-on in case they appeal the court’s ruling. The speaker recently announced that intentions to regulate committee sittings and I think that is the right way to go,” he added.
Efforts to reach assembly’s speaker Mr Joash Nyamoko for comments was futile since he could neither respond to texts nor calls.
