Residents in Athi River Sub-County have been urged to be cautious when crossing rivers during the ongoing rains.

Addressing journalists at his office in Athi River Town on Tuesday, the area deputy county commissioner, Kodeck Makori, said exercising caution would curb cases of residents drowning.

"My office is doing everything at its disposal to sensitise residents on the precautionary measures they need to take during the rainy season," said Makori.

Makori expressed concern over the floods being experienced in most parts of the sub-county, adding that the situation was getting worse.

The deputy commissioner said since the rains started in the region, two people had been swept away by floods, several houses and households damaged, and a number off roads cut off, thereby paralysing transport in the affected areas.

He said the most affected areas included Syiokimau, Kinanie, Katani, Sabaki, Kwa Mang'eli, Kasuitu, Jam City, Mlolongo and City Carton villages, all within the sub-county.

Makori said they expect the rivers, especially Athi and Mto Wa Mawe, to swell, following the heavy rains being experienced in the area.

He urged residents to be vigilant during the rainy season to avert deaths and damage to property, adding that residents should take personal security seriously especially when crossing flooded areas and seasonal rivers.
