Bamburi Mtambo area in Mombasa is a growing hub of economic activity, thanks to the population growth and investments in the area.

Residents who have lived in the area for long can testify to the massive change the place has undergone through the years.

“When I moved to Vescon estate back in 2000, there weren't any of the surrounding buildings, clubs and shopping centres. We only had Vescon and Bamburi Cement Company. The rest was a bush,” said Gladys, a resident.

The area now boasts of big chain supermarkets such as Naivas, Nakumatt, and restaurants and night clubs operating on a 24 hour basis.

However, with the increase in activities in the area, locals are now complaining of a decrease in moral values.

“It is embarrassing to meet sex workers who are dressed skimpily after a night out, when I am taking my son to school in the morning,” said Diana Wachira, a resident.

Business men and women in the area have attributed the area's success to the growing population.

“I used to own one night club but after receiving so many customers, I opened a second local pub opposite the old one to cater for the demand,” said Mwai, a business man in the area.
