This comes after a bodaboda operator was Sunday morning arrested in possession of a panga.

The suspect was arrested after police who intended to use the motorbike to move from Kikuyu to Zambezi noticed the panga.

The suspect claimed that the panga wasn't meant to carry out any crime but was for self defense.

Confirming the incident, Kikuyu OCPD SSP Mutune Maweu said the operator was not the first to be arrested as this was a common case among bodaboda operators.

He added  that bodaboda operators were notorious for such crimes.

The police boss said that security in Kikuyu region especially at night was being monitored closely by the police and such incidences were indications of one being involved in criminal activities.

Mutume said that recently, he banned operators in Zambezi from operating late in the night due to the increased criminal activities at night.

He said serious measures have to be taken against those caught in possession of such crude weapons.

He said that if the situation continues, the police will be forced to restrict bodaboda riders from operating in certain areas at night.

"I want to warn bodaboda operators against possessing dangerous weapons while at work. Most of them say that they carry them for self defense against criminals, we will not allow that," said Maweu.

He urged boda boda operators to cooperate with the police to curb crime.
