A group of Kisii community staying in America has donated 22, 000 text books to Kisii schools, an event that took place at Nyabururu Catholic Church.
Speaking on Thursday when he donated the books on behalf of MUKIDA; the name for the Diaspora group, Samuel Okwoyo said that they donated the books because they want education to continue to improve in the region.
Mr. Okwoyo noted that there is a poor reading culture among children in Kisii and Kenya at large that has prompted them to come up with the initiative as a campaigning tool to improve the reading culture.
They have donated more than 110,000 text books to various schools in Kisii since they begun the program back in 2010 according to their representative Okwoyo.
“MUKIDA contributes the money which we use to buy the books. This is our way of giving back to the community since we want to improve the reading culture among our children.”
On the same note, the Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Akama regretted that there is a moral erosion among growing children. He advised parents and other stakeholders to ensure that children are engaged in meaningful activities that can help them prosper in life such as an active reading culture.
