The national mass voter registration exercise is set to close in the next four days.
However the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is worried with the small number of people turning up to register.
As at third week of the exercise, the commission reported that only 800,000 people had registered against the four million target.
Even though Nyanza counties have been rated among the best performers in the exercise, the percentage of targeted numbers are still low with less than 30 per cent people turning up.
Nyando politician Jared Okelo now claims the bungled party primaries which have been witnessed in the area are to blame for the voter registration apathy.
Okelo said most people have been disappointed by the party nomination processes, and the low trend of voter registration may be reflected in the elections come 2017.
“In Luo Nyanza having an ODM ticket in the election gives you 80 per cent hand in winning the election, so when the nominations are not done properly and you feel a candidate of your choice has been unnecessarily denied the certificate, there are high chances that you will not get to vote because back in your mind you know he or she has lost the election,” said Okelo.
He added: “The IEBC has all the reasons to worry and it is time the political parties restore the confidence of the people in their nominations and grass root elections because this trend is likely to affect Raila Odinga’s presidential race in 2017.”
Okelo who lost the 2013 ODM nomination to incumbent Nyando MP Fred Outa has vowed to reclaim his ‘stolen victory’ on a Ford Kenya ticket in 2017.
