Kiambu County TNA Coordinator Gladys Chania has raised an alarm over rising cases of child neglect in Gatundu North.
Speaking at Kamwangi district headquarters in Gatundu North during an empowerment forum for disabled persons on Saturday, Chania observed that cases of child neglect especially those living with disabilities were high.
She said that some parents and guardians had neglected and abandoned their disabled children.
The anti-drugs campaigner noted that there was a rise in number of children roaming in the streets, leading to high illiteracy levels.
Chania added that some parents discriminate against the disabled children by denying them education and access to interact with other children.
She said that it was against the Children Act for parents and guardians to discriminate against disabled children.
“It’s unfortunate that parents and the society have abandoned and neglected their children just because they are disabled,” she said, adding that the society has to support children with disabilities.
She urged local administrators to ensure that disabled children in their localities are protected and their interests take care of.
Chania at the same time asked the government to establish a fund for children living with disabilities.
She said that the fund, if established, will ensure that disabled children are taken to school and their welfare taken care of.
