A Free Pentecostal church from South Mugirango constituency has contributed Sh306,000 that will be used in purchasing sanitary towels for school going girls.
The programme, which was initiated close to five months ago, entailed weekly collection from church members and well-wishers.
Speaking after the historical function on Monday at the Nyamarambe church compound, organizer Pastor Wilfred Chacha said the programme will target children from poor backgrounds and could be made a monthly exercise when the church secures sponsors.
“I never thought that we were going to reach the amount. Our target was Sh250,000 but we got more than that. This in an indication that people are ready to help the girl child. We will target children from impoverished backgrounds and it could be even a monthly exercise if we manage to get sponsors,” he said.
Pastor Chacha said the church decided to venture into the activity following a high number of girls reportedly skipping school during menstrual period due to lack of sanitary towels.
“The church is very close to a number of schools and the school heads have continuously reported cases of girls dropping out of school during that difficult time of the month. We hope this will no longer be the case because people have shown that they are ready to help,” he added.
He said the church will reach all primary and secondary schools from the constituency to take a tally of students who were in dire need of the towels before donating to them.
