The Parliamentary committee for Administration and National Security has been urged to speed up the process of adopting and implementing laws to allow prisoners vote in the next general elections.
In an interview with the former activist Jasper Mokunyo, prisoners in Kenya should be allowed to exercise their democratic right to vote in the next general elections, and there was need for the committee to speed up their mandate.
He added that there was need to amend several laws to pave way for prisoners to participate in national events that affect their lives as enshrined in the constitution, noting that that the inmates’ right to vote should be respected just like that of any other ordinary Kenyan.
“They have the right to participate in the next general election for they know what is going and it is good for them to choose the leaders of their choice in the next general election,” he added.
He added that the committee should make several recommendations on the Kenya Prisons Act that will allow inmates enjoy several rights, including that of voting.
The activist also urged Nyamira residents to ensure that they come out in large numbers so that they can register as voters.
