There are fears that some condom brands in the markets could be fake.

This concern was raised on Saturday as residents said that many condoms in the markets were likely to be fake posing a threat to people’s lives.

Those interviewed said the market was full of some condom brands, surgical needles and gloves that were unsafe for use.

According to peter Lusweti, a resident from Kibera, his friends had made him believe that the market was flooded with cheap condoms that they believed the condoms were not original.

"Some of my friends said the condoms could have been dumped in the Kenya from China since police in shanghai reported to have nabbed fake condoms in the china," said Peter.

The fake condoms have allegedly been packaged as normal brands but are in cheap plastic strips and elastic bands. The claims were however opposed by the ministry of health saying no fake condoms had been found in the market.

The principal secretary Nicholas Muraguri said all condoms available in the market had been tested and ISO certified adding that Kenyans had no excuse for not using them. Most youths use condoms for prevention of early pregnancies. Research shows that about 20 million male condoms are used monthly in Kenya.
