County governments have been challenged to strengthen public participation mechanisms in all development projects.
National Taxpayers Association coordinator Martin Napisa said most counties were ignoring the constitutional requirement that roots for public participation.
Napisa said locals must know the kind of projects lined up within their localities.
“Public participation is anchored in our constitution but you find that some counties do to treat is as a necessity,” he said.
He said the association is currently carrying out empowerment sessions among Kenyans to know the importance of public participation.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday during a session between county officials and stakeholders to review some projects funded by the county government of Kisumu, Napisa said they are targeting existing groups for capacity building.
He said the danger of lack of public participation in any project is enormous.
Napisa said projects that are done without involvement of public participation are prone not to be a priority of the locals thus wastage of public resource.
“You will find that projects that are done without public participation remain white elephants, they are done not to the standards and remains unutilised,” he said.
