Nyamira governor John Nyagarama has ordered the ministry of roads and public works to upgrade all major foot bridges in the county as a major control measure to avert possible disaster that could emanate from the ongoing rains in the region.

Nyagarama who was officiating opening of a foot bridge in North Mugirango said the move was a precaution to combat incidents of people drowning and subsequently succumbing when using the footbridges.

He urged MCAs to identify most needy cases so that they are rectified in time as part of disaster management program that is being carried out by the county.

“I have spoken to all MCAs and I hope they will forward serious cases to the public works department so that the mess is fixed before it causes tragedy. That must be done with the urgency it deserves because the county government is prepared to save lives of people,” he added.

The Nyamira county boss said the kitty that was set aside for El Nino would be used to fix old and weak foot bridges.

“Some of these bridges have been in existence for many years and are therefore weak. The county had set aside some cash meant for any emergency during the El Nino and I think that is a very crucial project,” he said.

He urged locals to also join the county government in identifying the most needy cases and called on parents to avoid sending their children to fetch water in streams that are synonymous for breaking their banks.
