Governor Jack Ranguma has said the county will use the Unicef developed model of Early Childhood Development classrooms to improve retention of pupils in school.

The governor said the model provides a conducive learning environment for the young children, coupled with a serene ambiance to entice them to be in school.

Addressing education stakeholders in Kisumu on Wednesday, Ranguma said the trend of giving the worst classrooms to the ECD pupils has made it difficult for them to cope with school.

"If you visit any primary school in the county you will find out that the oldest building is the one allocated to the ECD children. This is not right. The children are coming to school for the first time and it is at this time that they need the best out of school," he said.

He said the poor conditions of the ECD classrooms scare away children.

"It is this reason that we have increased funding for the ECD infrastructure and we have allocated Sh7 million for learning material, Sh7 million for feeding program and recruitment of 700 ECD teachers," he added.

According to Ranguma, the Unicef developed model has spacious rooms for children, complete compound with playing equipment as well as learning material.

He said the model tested and proven in other parts of the world has shown that children desire to go to school when they get the best at the onset.

He said an assessment in most schools indicated pathetic conditions which have since impacted in the health and social well being of the children, with some schools reporting jigger infestation due to poor floors.

"Education begins at the ECD and any foundation is important for a course. We have to change our attitude and focus on education foundation if we have to realise the importance of education," he added.
