The Ministry of education and Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) have been urged to consider executing radical changes in the current high school curriculum in a bid to ‘relieve’ learners from 'tedious' learning.

Speaking at Masaku Primary during a funeral ceremony, Prof Bogonko Nyachieo said the ‘tiresome’ curriculum was responsible for rampant exam cheating in the ongoing KCSE exams.

Bogonko urged stakeholders to subject learners to less subjects of their interest in preparation for future careers.

“I want to challenge the Ministry of education and KIE to revise the current high school curriculum. It is very tiresome and engaging for learners. They should be subjected to less subjects of their interest as a way to prepare them for their future careers,” he said.

The former Maseno University College principal (now Maseno University) said subjecting learners to fewer subjects was a common practice in developed countries and it boosts innovation and development in a nation.

“It does not mean that when you subject students to more subjects you improve their knowledge. The subjects become tedious and this contributes directly to exam malpractices. Fewer subjects in high schools are a common practice in developed counties and I think Kenya should adopt the same,” he added.
