Nyaribari Chache legislator Richard Tong’i has asked head teachers not to be intimidated into signing performance contracts.

Speaking when he visited various schools in his constituency, the MP said that they are backing the claims by the teacher's union that the performance contracts are meant to punish them given that they are already overburdened due to under-staffing.

“We are advising teachers not to sign these contracts until the union and the Teachers Service Commission discuss and agree on the way forward concerning this issue. Meanwhile, they should not be intimidated into signing the contracts,” he added.

He also accused the teachers’ employer of fighting to kill the union by refusing to deduct union dues from the tutor's salaries on the pretext that it wanted to validate the union’s membership.

“Teachers should stand for their right and they need to sign the contracts once the government employees more tutors,” he added.

He also called upon the teachers to ensure that they work hard in improving the education level in the country as a whole.
