Hundreds of Nyansiongo ward residents turned out in large numbers during the first day of a month long voter registration exercise that was commissioned by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
The exercise also attracted politicians who graced the occasion to challenge residents to turn out in large numbers during elections and make their voice heard by choosing dependable leaders.
Area MCA Jackson Mogusu lamented that many residents opted to skip voting, leading to election of leaders who were unable to execute their responsibilities perfectly when in office.
“Registering as voters is welcome, but the most important thing is making use of your vote by electing dependable leaders. It’s sad that in past we have not fared well in participating in polls. It’s my plea that we vote during elections because bad leaders are elected by good people who don’t vote,” he said.
Mogusu’s sentiments were echoed by aspiring Borabu MP Nyandoro Kambi, who challenged electorates to be part of decision making during national elections.
“I also want to back what my friend (Mogusu) has said. We can only be able to bring change to our country by making use of our votes. Nyamira region has a tendency of recording highest percentage of eligible voters who skip voting during General elections. I hope that we will see at least 95 per cent turn up during elections as opposed to 70 per cent in 2013,” he said.
The two leaders also challenged IEBC officials to ensure conditions of registration for people living with disabilities are regulated by taking the BVR kits to the comfort of their homes.
