Nakuru County Environment director Murithii Kiongozi has raised concern over the theft of litter bins in the county.

Kiongozi said 15 litter bins placed at Nakuru Nyayo Gardens had disappeared last year after they were stolen by unknown people.

“We have raised the issue of lack of bins in Nakuru County but unfortunately they are always being stolen. It becomes very hard to ensure the area is clean and all the garbage is collected,” he added

Kiongozi was speaking to the Street Nakuru youth group which had met to clean Nyayo Gardens on Thursday.

He added that the county askaris are on the alert for such thieves; a move he said is quite cumbersome.

“We cannot employ guards to take care of all the liter bins in the county. We need other people to help us,” Kiongozi added.

He said the department is in the process of installing and distributing more litter bins in the area to help in conservation.

The director said residents should take a personal initiative in cleaning up the county.

“It is an individual responsibility to ensure that the county is clean. Our main problem has been the poor distribution of litter everywhere,” he added.
