In the past four days Nairobi region has been receiving continuous rains which is has led to the rise of matatu fares.

The rains which have been on going has been a nightmare for Kibera residents as they forced to pay more than before to reach their destinations. The rains have even caused roads in Kibera to flood.

The continuous downpour has rendered the Yaya - Laini Saba Kibera – Kawangware - Uthiru road impassable as water has flooded it completely.  People using the road have been forced to use alternative routes to avoid all this hullabaloo to and from work. And those using vehicles will dig deep into their pockets to pay as fare to their destination.

Speaking on Friday, Michael Otengo, a tax driver, said he operates from Yaya to Kawangware and of late it has not been a walk in the past.

''During this rainy weather we raise fares to and from Kibera due to the less number of vehicles operating during the on going rains,'' said Otengo..

Some drivers prefer not to drive when it is raining. This reduces the number of vehicles on our roads thus making us increase fare because the number of passengers will definitely rise,'' said Otengo.

A shop attendant in the area, Robert Otieno, said that it is usual for matatu operators to hike fare once it rains. The logic behind it is that there is a lot of jam on the roads.
