Journalists in Nakuru town have been challenged to report positively about the ongoing voter registration exercise by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
IEBC communications officer Andrew Limo urged the scribes to be responsible when writing or reporting about the ongoing monthlong voter registration exercise which started on Monday.
Speaking during a media workshop organised by the IEBC in Nakuru town, Limo said the media has in the past concentrated on covering negative stories about the electoral body something he said has affected its relationship with the public.
He said the media should not only focus on looking for negative stories but also report about positive things about the registration exercise.
“The media should start writing good things about the registration exercise because this will encourage people to come out and register but if we start writing about the failure of the machines or the slow process, then we might discourage people,” said Limo.
He added, “Bad and negative reporting by the media affects IEBC greatly and you people should help change that.”
Limo promised that the IEBC will work closely with Nakuru journalists to ensure that they receive all the required support when covering the voter registration exercise in the county.
“We will give you all the support you need but also do as a favour by reporting positively about the voter registration exercise,” he said.
