A Kitutu Masaba politician has urged parents to give their children ample time to do revision and assignments during the December holiday.
Speaking at Iranya Primary school during the school's official closing day, Mr Victor Swanya said the region was lagging behind in academics due to parents not embracing private study programmes.
Swanya, who is also the proprietor of Swanya Foundation that promotes education in the region, challenged parents to ensure their children study during the holiday in a bid to maximise on time lost during the teachers’ strike.
“I am aware that our children did not get enough with their teachers due the teachers strike we witnessed in September. This is the opportune moment for parents to give public school children ample time to try and catch up with their counterparts from private schools,” said Swanya.
He challenged parents to hire tutors to guide children during the holiday without necessarily depending on formal holiday tuition that is being advocated by a section of area teachers.
“I am aware that some teachers in the region want the ban on holiday tuition lifted but that is really a non-issue. Parents can hire tutors to guide children from the comfort of their homes,” added Swanya.
He urged the provincial administration to intensify their surveillance to ensure children were not subjected to child labour in the region.
