Thika Town residents have urged the government to construct a foot bridge along the Thika-Garissa road to curb cases of accidents that are being experienced along the road.

According to the resident’s cases of people being knocked down by speeding motorist as they cross the road are on the rise.

The residents claimed that five people have been hit by vehicles along the road in the past one month.

Speaking to this writer on Monday, Timothy Wanyoike, a trader at Thika town observed that accidents are common along the road.

He said that construction of a foot bridge and walk paths will tame the accidents.

“The government through the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) should construct foot bridges along the Thika-Garissa road to help curb accidents,” said Wanyoike.

He said that most victims of accidents are school children who are hit while heading to school.

Sharon Njeri, a resident, said that the road is dangerous for school children, adding that motorists using the road over speed without considering that school children use the road while heading to school.

“We are concerned by the rise in accidents along this road and the best option is for the government to construct foot bridges,” she said.

The residents spoke as police in the area launched a manhunt for a driver who hit and injured two children as they were crossing the Thika-Garissa Road on Monday.

The driver who escaped is said to have hit the children on Monday morning.

According to the police, the driver of the Matatu that belongs to the G-Shuttle Sacco fled after committing the accident.

Confirming the incident, Thika OCPD Erastus Muthamia said police are looking for the driver.

Addressing journalists at his Thika office on Monday, the OCPD said that the children aged 12 and 9, were crossing the Thika-Garissa highway before being hit by the Matatu near Cravers Hotel.

“We have launched a manhunt for the driver who hit and injured the two children and legal action will be taken against him,” said Muthamia.

The OCPD said that they suspect the driver was over-speeding when he hit the two minors.

Muthamia said that the children suffered multiple fractures and are admitted at the Thika Level 5 Hospital.

He said the children are out of danger adding that stern action will be taken against the Sacco if they fail to produce the suspect.
