Youth in Kisii County have been advised to engage in meaningful projects to enable them get empowered economically and avoid following politicians for handouts.
Speaking to this journalist in her office on Tuesday, Nyaribari Chache parliamentary aspirant Rachael Otundo advised the youth to start with little money they have, observing many people have excelled in life after starting with little funds.
“I have always told off youth who run to me for a handout. It is not that am mean but am sensitizing them to learn to be self reliant because handouts are seasonal and our children cannot make any progress if they lean on them," she said.
She added: “We complain why we do not see our leaders after ascending them to power. It is because the electorate, simply idle youths an even some elderly persons run after elected leaders whenever they spot them in the village. We must change the deep-rotted culture and abstain from the behavior of following up politicians for handouts even when election time is far.”
The politician condemned people who use the youth as stepping stones to power instead of supporting them to get financial strength to initiate projects to boost their lives.
“My appeal to the politicians who give our children handouts is that they should instead guide them and make them get economic stamina through initiating and financing projects for them. This is better rather than giving Sh50 to them,” Ms Otundo said.
