Nyamira woman representative Alice Chae has challenged healthcare workers to join in the fight against female genital mutilation in Gusii region.
Chae said it has come to their notice that some medics are abetting the outlawed practice.
She said the health workers should instead join those fighting the vice.
Speaking on Sunday at Kisii stadium during a funds drive organised by Maendeleo ya Wanawake group, the MP urged medics to champion against FGM and ensure it is wiped out from the region.
“I am sure if heath workers join us, we will win this war, let us fight this together please,” said the woman rep.
She added; “Let us leave our girls complete their studies so that they can help the society. We don’t want any editing on our bodies.”
Her Nandi and Kisii counterparts Zipporah Kering and Mary Otara respectively echoed her sentiments by stressing that there is no need for girls to undergo the ‘cut’ at all.
“Whoever will be found engaging in the vice will be arrested,” said Otara.
On Friday, the Anti-FGM Board chairperson, Linah Jebii Kilimo warned chiefs who condone and allow the outlawed practice that they risk prosecution according to Prohibition of FGM Act (2011).
