The media holds the key to realising the success of the massive voter registration drive, an election official has disclosed.
David Towett, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Central Rift elections coordinator said journalists have a big influence over the society and therefore are better placed to convince more people to register as voters.
Speaking Monday during a media workshop in Nakuru town, Towett said they were banking on the media to help them realise their voter registration targets in the region, which he said was home to retrogressive practices that do not encourage women to vote.
"In the Central Rift, we cover four counties including Baringo, Nakuru, Laikipia and Samburu and you realise that it is here that we have some cultural issues that do not encourage electoral processes especially among women. Therefore, the only way we can change such perceptions and register such women is through the media which can effectively carry this message to them," he said.
The workshop which was organised by the IEBC, sought to train journalists on how to cover the voter registration exercise, which began Monday.
