A section of Limuru town residents has urged the national government to sensitize them and help them register with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The residents say that they are clueless on the services being offered by the National Health Fund.

According to residents who spoke to this writer on Sunday, they said they only hear about NHIF from the media.

The locals think that the National Health Insurance is only meant for public civil servants. “We are in the dark because no one has ever educated us about NHIF, we only hear about it from civil servants and the media,” said Peninah Kariuki.

Ms Kariuki said that it will be necessary for the government to educate them on the Fund for them to access better healthcare.

She said that many residents with informal jobs are not members of the fund.

Simon Kamau, a food vendor in Limuru said that the government needs to sensitize locals on important initiatives.

He observed that most people in the area especially those who are not in employment don’t know about NHIF.

Speaking to journalists at Kiambu county headquarters on Thursday last week, County health executive Mr Jonah Mwangi urged residents to register with the Fund.

He said registering with the Fund will enable Kenyans access treatment at all times. The executive said that the county is closely working with the NHIF to sensitize Kiambu residents on the Fund.

He observed that most patients fail to get treatment due to lack of money.
