The Interim Electoral and Boundaries Commission has been urged to consider people living with disabilities in the coming 2017 general election by ensuring proper structures are adopted that will favour them.
Speaking to the media at Ngala Secondary School for the Deaf in Nakuru, nominated MCA Emma Mbugua who represents people with disabilities in the county assembly, reiterated that the disabled also have the right to vote and choose leaders of their choice.
"People living with disabilities also have their constitutional rights to choose their preferred candidates in the coming elections. This is something that should be supported and exercised all over the country. Therefore, the IEBC should ensure proper structures are put in place that make it easy for the people to vote," Mbugua stated.
Among the things the nominated MCA suggested to be improved are having sign language interpreters in all polling stations, giving people with disabilities first priority during the process and having people in polling stations to guide the disabled when voting.
‘The IEBC should ensure that all polling stations have sign language interpreters to explain to the deaf what they need to do as well having people to help those on wheelchairs by moving them around. Most of these people always face many challenges in life therefore they should be given first priority over others to enable them vote quickly and go to rest," Mbugua further added.
