The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission should adopt the online system of voting to combat perennial cases of vote rigging during polls, an aspiring MP from Kitutu Masaba has said.

According to Mr  Victor Ogeto, the system will help the electoral body restore its image to the public as it has excelled in advanced democracies around the world.

Ogeto said the system will also help reduce congestion in the polling stations since the number of eligible voters will be able to access it through their mobile phones or computers.

“The country has migrated from analogue technology and I still don’t know why we should be subjected to manual voting. The current system does not allow immediate transmission of results to the national tallying center so it doesn’t make any difference. I think time has come for the IEBC to adopt online voting which has been tested and succeeded in countries such as US and Britain,” he said.

The online system is also important in cutting down the budget of electoral process since only few people would be employed. Furthermore, the direct transmission of results to national tallying center will combat cases of rigging.

“With the system, I think our country will no longer talk of rigging. The cost of holding an election will drastically reduce a past from reducing congestion in polling centers during polls and this will help the commission restore confidence among all members of the public,” Mr Ogeto when he addressed residents of Mochenwa on Tuesday.

He ruled out any chances of infiltration by external forces saying those who will access the system will have the results reflect immediately at the national tallying centre.

“It’s a system which experts have proved in other nations. And I prefer we go for the one which we use USSD code which does not require internet. The result will reflect at the tallying center and cases of rigging will be done away with,” he said.
