The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has raised concern over violence incidents reported in some parts of Nairobi County.
The commission said it is disturbed by rising incidents of insecurity in the ongoing mass voter registration that kicked off on February 15 countrywide.
“Violence has been reported in parts of Nairobi occasioned by a high number of voter transfers. IEBC staff carrying out voter registration in Starehe, Mathare, Embakasi North and Ruaraka have been targeted by incumbent political leaders and aspirants mobilising voters and their supporters to register,” read part of a statement signed by IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba.
Chiloba condemned the violence, saying it jeopardised the crucial exercise.
“The commission condemns this violence which is endangering the safety of IEBC staff and equipment, and putting the entire exercise at risk. We call on the police to act expeditiously to guarantee the security of our staff and protect potential voters from intimidation,” he said.
He also said the electoral body is investigating the cases, and will ensure those responsible for the violence are brought to book.
“The commission is investigating and will take stern action against the perpetrators of violence or any form of interfere with the voter registration exercise, pursuant to the law,” he said.
