Kisumu County executive committee member for communication, information and technology, Michael Onyango, has been asked to protect journalists from unnecessary arrests by the police.
This comes just a day after Kisumu based journalist, Brian Otieno, popularly known as Odhiambo Otieno, was arrested on Tuesday morning for allegedly defaming a gubernatorial aspirant.
Speaking on Wednesday, Odhiambo, said three police officers went for him at the Kenya News Agency offices at Prosperity House building and arrested him.
"They told me that one Dr.Hezron Mc'Obewa, a gubernatorial aspirant wanted to talk to me. We then proceeded to the Central Police station where I was locked up until 9 pm that night," said Odhiambo.
The journalist said that he was being charged for 'misuse of telecommunication gadget'.
On Monday, Odhiambo posted on his facebook account, information that did not go well with Mc'Obewa, who went ahead and ordered for his arrest. Onyango has now asked the county information boss to protect journalists against what he termed as 'unnecessary' arrests by the police.
Kisumu Journalists Network Chairman, Dickson Odhiambo, while speaking at his Winmart Market office in Milimani, also asked the Michael Onyango to protect journalists from intimidation by politicians and police.
